If every single occupant vehicle driver shared a ride one day a week, there would be about 20% less traffic in New York.

Instead of driving alone to work, as a member of a flexible carpooling system you would drive (or walk, or cycle) to a flexible carpooling park.

At the park you can decide to be a rider or a driver. Parking is by destination (where you park tells others where you are going).

The fuller car drives to the destination drop-off point. Riders walk (or take transit) from there to work. Drivers park their cars in the usual place.

At the end of the workday riders walk and drivers drive to a pick-up point, form fuller cars, and drive back to the flexible carpooling park. Riders collect their cars and drive home.

This page has links to a full description of the system and an animation of the system. The animation is the best way to get a quick overview.
